Employees with ready access to mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, prefer accessing employee benefit and pay information using mobile apps rather than using their desktops and laptop computers, an ADP Research Institute Study shows.
The study, released Tuesday, found that 37% of registered mobile users use mobile human resource apps to access their pay information, compared with 23% who use desktops and laptops.
"The human resources function is a key asset in today's business mobility landscape because of its ability to connect and inform the workforce in an easily scalable way," says Roberto Masiero, vice president and head of ADP's Innovation Lab.
The study analyzed a subset of ADP's mobile data across approximately 5,000 organizations reflecting 65,000 individual active mobile users, and identified several key findings, including:
- Employees especially value the ability to access their pay information through a mobile app. The study found twice as many employees view their pay information as those who view their benefits information on their mobile device.
- Industries operating outside a traditional office are most likely to want HR information on the go. The study found that certain industries such as construction, natural resources and mining, manufacturing, transportation and utilities and the real estate, rental and leasing industries have approximately a 25% higher concentration of employees using mobile devices for HR functions than any other industry. The increased use of mobile apps in these industries could be attributed to the fact that employees in these fields may not typically have access to traditional desktop computers.
- Professional and business service employees use of mobile devices to access HR information, on the other hand, is 20% below the average. With greater access to laptops and desktops, fewer employees in this sector are taking advantage of mobile HR applications, the study found.
With younger employees beginning to populate the workforce, many of whom demand instant access to information through mobile devices after having grown up with it, companies are already investing in more HR functionality on mobile devices, according to ADP. Many companies are beginning to use HR applications offering time entry, retirement account management and work schedule viewing as well as company news through mobile applications.
