Working parents are not just juggling their own schedules and responsibilities, but their childrens' too. And while providing that demographic with more support falls on individual employers, there are certain states that have a better foundation for it than others.

Seventy-two percent of working parents said they were stressed due to disruptions and uncertainty about school and child care schedules, according to a recent study from the American Psychological Association. In response to that stress, HR tech companySelectSoftware Reviews ranked all 50 states to find the locations with the most support for working parents.

"Parents often have last-minute leave requests due to unforeseen circumstances like lack of childcare, family emergencies or illness," said Phill Strazzulla, CEO of SelectSoftware Reviews. "Finding an employer that can accommodate this flexibility from a HR perspective is key for retaining staff and maintaining employee satisfaction."

Every state was ranked on a scare out of 60, based on factors such as public-school rankings, the duration of available maternity leave, the current cost of living, the percentage of income needed to pay for childcare and maternity leave pay.

Connecticut was named the best state for working parents with a score of 52.6 out of 60 for its generous maternity leave of 12 paid weeks off, and being one of the states with the highest-rated public schools and where the average parent will only have to dedicate 25% of their annual income to cover child care expenses. Maryland and Colorado followed closely with scores of 49.9 and 49.3 out 60, respectively, for their comparable parental leave, affordable child care and good public schools systems.

"Navigating the challenges of being a working parent requires a well thought-through approach to balance the juggling act of raising a family whilst working," Strazzulla said. "Companies that prioritize a good work-life balance and offer family-friendly policies can play a crucial role in fostering an environment where your family can thrive, contributing to both a happy work life and a happy home life."
