10 states where workers are most and least likely to quit

Many people use the first few months of the year to evaluate their feelings about their jobs and decide if they want to make a change by quitting, potentially due to factors including return to office mandates, burnout and compensation. 

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed the states where workers are most and least likely to quit in December 2024. 

While many factors are driving these decisions, there are a few trends: The states where workers are most likely to quit have more rural areas, where there are less remote work opportunities. Additionally, of these 10 states, four follow the federal minimum wage of $7.25 and two have a minimum wage that is less than the federal standard. 

Alaska has the highest rate of workers quitting their jobs, at 3.2%, with 11,000 workers quitting in December 2024. 

Other states where workers are quitting the most include South Carolina and Wyoming. Both states had a quits rate of 3% in December, with South Carolina having 73,000 workers quit and Wyoming having 9,000 workers quit.

Massachusetts has the lowest rate of workers quitting their jobs, with a December 2024 quits rate of 1.3% and 48,000 workers quitting their jobs. 

Other states where workers are quitting the least include Pennsylvania, Illinois and Florida. All three states had a quits rate of 1.5% in December 2024, with 94,000 workers quitting in Pennsylvania, 93,000 workers quitting in Illinois and 153,000 workers quitting in Florida.
