Job search engine Adzuna ranked which jobs have seen a significant uptick in vacancies since January 2021, with warehouse workers topping the list at a nearly 354% increase. Other service-related roles, including cashiers, restaurant managers and receptionists also saw triple-digit increases in need, despite high turnover and quit rates for those positions throughout the pandemic.
“When we looked at 2021 being another pandemic year, we expected an increase in demand for at-home services,” says Lily Valentin, head of operations of North America at Adzuna. “A warehouse worker is essential to vulnerable populations, as well as anyone who is COVID-conscious and can no longer go out. Equally, those within the gig economy do not want to be exposed to big groups of people and may find a position like warehouse worker more favorable than an Uber driver, for instance.”

Valentin does not foresee this trend changing in 2022, noting that the U.S. is a service-driven economy and goods delivery will only become more commonplace, regardless of when COVID ends. This means jobs that support stores and delivery services will see more demand and in some instances, even higher wages — warehouse workers saw a 10% hike in advertised salary, for example.
