Americans work hard, with only 48% of workers using all of their vacation days, but workers in some states seem to work harder than employees in other states.

WalletHub recently ranked the 50 states to determine which have the hardest workers by comparing key factors including average workweek hours to the share of workers with multiple jobs to the average leisure time spent per day.

North Dakota ranks as the hardest working state, with the highest employment rate in the country at 98%. Workers between the ages 16 and 64 work an average of 39.7 hours per week in this state.

Other top hard-working states include Alaska and Nebraska. Workers in Alaska between the ages of 16 and 64 work 41.6 hours per week, the highest number of hours in the country—exceeding the standard 40-hour work week. In Nebraska, 7.4% of workers hold multiple jobs.

"It's undeniable that America has fostered a culture of hard work, with people working longer hours than residents of other developed countries and often leaving vacation time on the table," said Cassandra Happe, a WalletHub analyst, in a release. "Working hard is commendable, but people in the hardest-working states may need to consider taking a break once in a while, as a lack of leisure time can have a negative impact on people's physical and mental health."
