Every job seeker knows it's not easy finding a company that checks all your boxes — but U.S. News & World Report may be able to help.

U.S. News put together a list of over 500 companies that rated highly across six metrics: quality of pay and benefits, work-life balance and flexibility, job stability, physical and psychological comfort, sense of belonging and opportunities for professional development. Scoring each metric on a scale of 1-5 (five being the highest), job seekers can quickly tell which companies are excelling. Notably, the companies aren't ranked against each other.

"Our mission is to help our users explore and make decisions about their careers," says Carly Chase, vice president of careers at U.S. News. "That's why we don't numerically rank employers, because we want our users to be able to come and figure out what's most important to them."

Chase emphasizes that what qualifies as the "best" company to a job seeker depends on a person's stage of life and their stressors. However, she points out that the platform asked their readers to rank the metrics — and among the 5,000 responses, quality of pay and work-life balance took the number one and number two spots, respectively.

"We're dependent on our employers to help us ensure that we can pay our bills on time and have the flexibility to take care of our family's health as well," says Chase. "It's like Maslow's hierarchy of needs, but instead of shelter and food, quality of pay and work-life balance are at the top."
