The Great Resignation marked its one-year anniversary in April, and it doesn’t look like it’s disappearing anytime soon: Gartner estimates that up to 37 million Americans may voluntarily quit their jobs this year. But for those new job seekers, not all opportunities are created equal — and the ones workers are most interested in may be a surprise to employers.
Adzuna, a job search engine platform, recently analyzed over 25 million U.S. job vacancies and ranked jobs according to the highest application rate. The results show a renewed interest in public sector work, domestic help roles and academic-related careers.

“As the Great Reshuffle continues, job seekers continue to find themselves in the driver's seat as the competition for talent and the vaccine rollout boost a newfound confidence,” says Paul Lewis, chief customer officer at Adzuna. “Adzuna’s goal was to see where various interests lie, across industries, by looking at what roles job seekers are currently viewing and clicking the most.”
While revitalized interest in jobs including housekeepers, academic advisers and post office counter clerks might come as a shock — especially since jobs in fields like housekeeping pay as little as $30,658 per year — Lewis points out that people may be looking for jobs where formal education is not required. That’s why, in part, road construction supervisor topped the list at number one.
“The role offers the chance to progress and earn a healthy pay packet — up to $85,000 is common,” says Lewis. “But it’s a job that is open to those without a formal education in engineering. These roles reflect the growing interest in jobs that don’t require a college degree, or that offer on-the-job training and flexibility.”
