High unemployment, limited healthcare: Why Texas and Nevada residents are stressed

U.S. workers are some of the most stressed in the entire world, according to Gallup. Within the nation, those stress levels vary significantly across state lines — and some employees are feeling crushed by their own anxiety.

To understand where American workers are suffering the most, medical marijuana card company Leafwell set out to uncover which state has the most stressed out workers, and why.

The company compiled recent data from the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Google trends, the Centers for Disease Control and the Federal Reserve across seven key metrics, including employment, housing and health. Each state was then assessed on a total "stress scale" of 80 points.

"The results from this study offer revealing insights into how causes of stress can range widely from state to state," Mitch Doucette, director of research at Leafwell, said in a release. "By analyzing metrics, we can see a comprehensive picture of the unique pressures each state grapples with."

Nevada is the most stressed state with a score of 67.42 out of 80. The Silver State has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 5.4%. Home values have taken a significant hit, down 5.71% since last year according to reports from the Las Vegas Realtors association, and residents are more likely to turn to Google for information on "Insomnia" and "anxiety." Texas came in second place with a stress score of 64.64 out of 80, largely due to 20% of its under-65 population lacking any form of health insurance.

Georgia and California followed closely behind with stress scores of 62.87 and 62.6, respectively. The Peach State had the second highest stress-related Google searches, as well as the fifth-highest percentage of citizens without health insurance. California earned its spot thanks to high unemployment, with 4.6% of folks in the Golden State out of work.
