With many companies set to slow hiring and even make cuts to their workforce, Americans may be debating whether this is a good time to stick with their careers or make a change. However, there are still many jobs set for growth and demand in the next decade.
U.S. News and World Report examined jobs with the largest number of projected openings from 2021 to 2031 and ranked the top 100 jobs from there, considering pay, day-to-day stress and
"Jobs with a low unemployment rate and high median salary, current employer rating and projected job growth over the next 10 years rank higher on the list," says Janica Ingram, careers expert at U.S. News. "Software developer ranked at number one — this is a stable profession that is growing."

Software development has a projected job growth as high as 26% in the next 10 years, outpacing every other job on this list, explains Ingram. Notably, software developers climbed four spots in 2023, with technology ranked as the third fastest-growing industry. Jobs in healthcare and social assistance — the second fastest-growing industry — also dominated this year's list.
But jobs related to the number one growing industry, leisure and hospitality, are not as present on the U.S. News rankings, possibly due to lower pay. ZipRecruiter estimates an average salary of $58,858 per year, while a majority of the other top jobs come with six-figure salaries.
