Excellence in technology: How Beam Benefits is prioritizing small businesses

Alex Frommeyer, co-founder and CEO of Beam Benefits

While bigger employers tend to have their pick of benefits, small and medium-sized businesses are looking for strategic ways to break the status quo to attract and retain talent.

Alex Frommeyer, co-founder and CEO of supplemental benefits provider Beam Benefits, wants to lend a helping hand. Growing its member base by 400% in the last three years, Beam Benefits — formerly Beam Dental — has added vision, life, disability and supplemental health insurance to its platform, well beyond its original dental offering.

"We're positioned to take employee benefits the next level, especially for small and medium-sized businesses, who need it most," says Frommeyer. "We want to bring benefits together on one digital platform and make it feel seamlessfor employers."

Beam's rebrand and expansion took place just a few months ago, but Frommeyer is already ready to push further.

What should we expect from Beam in the near future?
In the coming weeks, quarters and years, you will see us rebuild ancillary benefits from the bottom up to create a differentiated and compelling experience for our members. We have an opportunity to build a platform where companies have access to a level of customization that allows each member to select the benefits that only make sense for their workers.

What fuels your mission to expand benefits access?
My wife is a former professional ballet dancer, and it's clear these athletes do this out of passion and love of the art form — they aren't paid like football or basketball stars. As a business, when we think about our own employees' work ethic and who we want to serve as a benefits company, the ballet dancer is the perfect proxy. They resonate with us on a human level, and it's a very unique place to draw inspiration from.
