HR leaders divulge their secrets

It's always nice to be recognized for a job well done, and in that spirit, Employee Benefit News has honored 39 companies with its Best HR Teams list.

This inaugural list included companies in a variety of industries, including insurance, financial services, medical care and accounting, and recognized both small and large employers. The winners outlined their biggest win for the year, the philosophies that drive them and much more.

"Our mantra is that HR has a seat at the table where the business decisions are made. This helps us engage with the business, remain curious, and continue to learn and develop," says Barbara Martell, CHRO of Allianz Trade in North America.

Besides recognizing the Best HR Teams, EBN has also honored 25 individuals with its fourth annual Excellence in Benefits awards. These HR leaders, innovators and advisers represent the best the industry has to offer. Which is why EBN asked these winners to share their best tips, strategies and suggestions for young talent and newcomers on how to succeed in the benefits industry

"Our field evolves rapidly, so maintaining a curious attitude is essential to staying ahead of emerging trends and innovative solutions," says Jennifer Loar, account executive team lead at Lockton Companies. "Engage in conversations with peers and subject matter experts and dedicate time to reading articles that deepen your understanding of industry dynamics."

EBN also asked its Excellence in Benefits honorees to weigh in on the important topic of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As it stands, burnout continues to be a national concern: Over half of employees have reported feeling burned out this past year, and 37% reported feeling so overwhelmed it impacted their ability to do their job, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health. Notably, managers are the hardest hit, with a higher rate of burnout over entry-level employees at 54% versus 40%.

The Excellence in Benefits winners had different approaches to supporting their workers in this area but one theme was clear: Leaders lead by example. Their employees know they can care for themselves because their leaders take the time to do so, too.

"I am completely transparent about healthcare appointments, vacation, mental health days, prioritizing family time and even just taking lunch," says Celine Cannizzaro, head of health and wellness at Geico. "I encourage my team to be like me. I lead by example, and I'm thankful that my team is fully able to follow my lead."

Finally, HR and benefits leaders have a lot on their plates. Besides prioritizing well-being, these experts must keep current employees happy, deliver quality benefits and fair compensation and stay within budget.

EBN's Excellence in Benefits winners represent the best in being able to juggle these varying mandates. These leaders know what organizations need to build engaged and healthy environments for their workforce. These leaders have big plans for themselves and for their companies to succeed in the years to come.

"My goal is to have a larger impact and leadership influence within our organization," says Valerie Francis, VP of employee benefits at HUB International Insurance New England. "I plan on doing this by leading with humility and elevating with ambition in a way that embodies my purpose and values."
