Some workers aren’t happy unless their job is more than just a job — they want a career with purpose and passion.
Financial services company TIAA — in collaboration with career builder LinkedIn — has launched CareerPurpose, a platform for connecting workers to career coaching and employment opportunities at nonprofit organizations.
TIAA and LinkedIn partnered on the project after discovering there are people who want to work exclusively for nonprofit organizations. A 2018 study by TIAA revealed existing nonprofit employees are twice as likely as other employees to define success as “helping others and their community.” About 57% of millennials — the most represented generation in today’s workforce — said they want a job they’re passionate about, according to a LinkedIn survey.
“TIAA recognizes that more and more professionals are looking for a sense of purpose in their careers, and we built CareerPurpose by TIAA to help meet those needs,” says Roger W. Ferguson Jr., CEO of TIAA. “Inspired by our clients and their commitment to serving others, we joined with LinkedIn to help provide these professionals with every opportunity for success and for the kind of career satisfaction that comes from learning and developing themselves.”
LinkedIn has customized its job search function with CareerPurpose to connect job seekers with nonprofit openings related to their skills and interests. The job search function is valuable for nonprofits looking for new hires to bring talent to their organization’s mission.
“The site will help HR and employers source talent via the site, and specifically source talent that is interested in having a real impact,” says Lauren Post, senior director of communications at TIAA. “There are many employers who are in the not for profit space that people don’t immediately think of like hospitals, universities, research, etc. They will get additional exposure via CareerPurpose.”
CareerPurpose offers a starting point for folks looking to pursue careers in the nonprofit sector by providing educational materials on getting started in the industry. Interested parties will be able to explore all the different industries with not-for-profit organizations; including education, healthcare, operations, sales, engineering, research, information technology and software.
Site content will also focus on helping existing non-profit employees build their careers by providing digital training sessions and advice columns from industry leaders. Users will be asked to complete a survey on their career interests and goals so the site can generate personalized content relevant to their individual career goals.
“Many not for profit employers are smaller and don’t have the resource to develop full programs around career development,” Post says. “Career Purpose can help their employees grow their skills and continue building their skill sets.”
A large portion of the site’s content will be created and curated by LinkedIn. Post said LinkedIn’s Marketing Solutions Insights team will focus on marketing the site to millennials because of the generation’s interest in nonprofit careers.
