In Human Resources, the power of listening cannot be overstated. As the senior vice president of people at Maven Clinic, a telehealth company that works to provide care for women and families, Karsten Vagner knows this well.
“I couldn't find a better mission than supporting parents in the workplace,” says Vagner. “We are talking about people who come with different lived experiences and have different needs.”

In response to last summer’s Black Lives Matter movement, employee feedback led Vagner to launch a company-wide anti-racism campaign, where everyone at Maven came together to create a 12-month roadmap centered on thoughtful representation within the company as well as in its external communications. Language was revised on Maven’s website as well as in its products and training.
His commitment to supporting others stretches far beyond his day job. Vagner volunteers with Techqueria and Avenues for Justice, serving as a mentor to young people with disadvantaged backgrounds.
“If I've been given this life, I better make the best use of it,” says Vagner, who was born in Colombia before being adopted and raised in New York. “If somebody gave me a chance, I need to be in a position where I can give lots of chances to other folks.”
